“8-4…Us”: Joining the Giant’s Bandwagon
Luckily for me, San Francisco is a bandwagonning kind of town. It is afterall a city built in the 1850’s by the Gold Rush as settlers flocked West in search of striking it rich. Though I know a handful of born and bred San Franciscans, most people I know flocked here for the same sense of exploding opportunity in the late 90’s and have stayed through the ups and downs having discovered a city that we love for so many reasons.
Admittedly I’m not much of a baseball fan. In fact, for most of tonight’s game I was in a yoga class, but walking out of the gym, noticing a group huddled around the TV, I asked the desk guy what the score was. “8-4,” he said. “Who’s up?” I asked. “Us.”
I smiled and walked out and as cliche as it sounds it felt good to have an “us”. It felt good to have a city that I’ve spent most of my working life in, a city that I now consider home. A city that welcomes its bandwagonning fans because they are the ones that come here heads full of dreams and creativity and who work their hearts out in search of creating something great.
Apropos that we’ve finally got a scrappy baseball team that’s out creating something great. Who better to beat than Texas too? Our rival in so many ways beyond baseball. Go get ‘em Giants, you’ve got a new fan.
